Physical Benefits of Tai Chi Practice

Tai Chi form practice is suitable for people of all ages who are in reasonably good health. The movements are done at a slow and relaxed pace. This unhurried tempo provides the opportunity to develop a better awareness of both the body's position in space and the physical sensations that occur during performance of the various postures. Tai Chi form practice offers a variety of physical benefits, such as:

  • The exercise is low impact and thus easier on the joints of the body.

  • Improves posture, coordination, flexibility and everyday physical functioning.

  • Improves and helps maintain better balance and stability by strengthening ankles, knees and legs.

  • Calms the breath and promotes deep abdominal breathing.

  • Can increase bone density for everyone and can reduce bone loss in menopausal women.

  • Can result in some reduction of blood pressure.

  • Can reduce pain and stiffness related to osteoarthritis.

  • Can improve sleep quality.

Mental Benefits of Tai Chi Practice

Tai Chi form practice also offers a number of mental benefits such as:

  • Clears and calms the mind.

  • Helps reduce mental and physical effects of stress.

  • Helps reduce anxiety and depression.

  • Improves powers of concentration and focus.

  • Promotes mind and body integration through use of mental imagery.

Relaxation and Well Being

Tai Chi form practice, done regularly, can lead to a greater sense of calmness, tranquility and an overall sense of relaxation and well being. When it is consistently performed on a daily basis, the body learns to relax both physically and mentally and thus carries less tension throughout one's day. Students also report having better balance and an increase in energy, stamina and agility.
